The “Borinage”

February 18th, 2019, La Louvière. In this central region of Belgium, most hills (or terrils) are artificially created. They are the silent witnesses of the past, i.e. the exploitation of the coal. Their slopes are covered by an exuberant vegetation while their flattened tops may offer an open view over the surroundings. Over 10 terrils may be spotted from a single site…
